Eliza Louisa Rose was born on 13 May 1842 in Lexington, Greene Co, NY, the ninth of fourteen children born to Samuel Rose and Anna Kent.

She married Mr George Henry Gardner on 11 Oct 1856 in Deposit, Broome Co, NY, the widower of her late sister Mary Etta Rose.

Eliza Louisa and George had two sons; George Henry Jr and Samuel Rose.

Louisa's death is not well documented. The following is an excerpt from George's journal:

"In October General Disc sent an order for all that wasn't fit to go to the front must be sent home to vote [1864], so I got a furlough to go to Deposit, to vote. When I got there my wife had gone to Wyoming [County, PA], to her fathers, seventy two miles and I was to lame to go any further so I did not see her nor my three children. The time did not go well with me for I returned disappointed and down hearted, but I headed to Newark and when I got back things were still worse if possible. I became tired of life and thought if I had to stay there I did not want to live so I managed to get my name among a squad that was going to the front."

So, it is believed by George that Louisa was still alive in October 1864 and living with the three children in Wyoming Co, PA with her parents.

George was discharged on 25 May 1865 at Washington, D.C. and made his way back to Deposit. He was enumerated in the 1865 State Census working and residing at the Ford Hotel on Front Street in Sanford, Broome Co, NY. It was noted that he was twice married.

So it is not known whether or not Louisa and the children were reunited with him in Deposit after the war in 1865 or whether she died in Monroe, P.O. Evans Falls, Wyoming Co, PA and George sent for the boys once he was settled.

We do know that George's daughter Anna E. Gardner by his first wife, was raised by her maternal grandparents in Wyoming Co, PA, after the war and her name was changed to Mary Etta Gardner.

So this memorial is being placed in Laurel Hill Cemetery along with her husband, two sons and sister. If anyone can ever prove her place of burial please let me know.
