Civil War Confederate Brigadier General, US Congressman. Born in Fayetteville, Tennessee, he graduated from Nashville University in 1839, from the law department of Transylvania University, Kentucky, in 1841, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced to practice law in Fayetteville, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1847-48). During the Civil War he served as Inspector General of Tennessee, with the rank of Brigadier General and on the staff of Governor Isham G. Harris, (1861-65). In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1881. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Fayetteville, Tennessee. He died at the age of 94.
