U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of Nashville and served in the U.S. Army, during the Seminole War, in 1836. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced to practice law in Jackson, Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1840-41) and served as Colonel of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Volunteers, U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. After leaving Congress, he practiced law until his death from mental illness.
