Indian War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the United States Army during the Wars with the Plains Indians as a Sergeant in Company H, 6th United States Cavalry. He was azwarded the CMOH for his bravery at Sappa Creek, Kansas, on April 23, 1876, His citation reads "1st Sgt. Platten with 5 other men waded in mud and water up the creek to a position directly behind an entrenched Cheyenne position, who were using natural bank pits to good advantage against the main column. This surprise attack from the ememy rear broke their resistance". His Medal was awarded to him on November 18, 1876. After he left the Army in 1882, he made his way to Alaska were he did fairly well during the Alaska Gold Rush of 1898 and by 1910 he moved down to Williams, Arizona, were he ran a local tavern. He died in 1939, of heart failure brought on by pneumonia at age 92. His burial was done with full military honors by the Local Legion (The rumor that he was buried with his CMOH is untrue).
