Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1834, and served in the Mexican War. Most of his military service was spent in the Army Paymaster Department. When the Civil War broke out, he was serving on the Pacific Coast under paymaster Benjamin Alvord. When Alvord was advanced to Brigadier General and given comand of the Department of the Pacific, Cary H. Fry was promoted to Major and took over the post of Chief Paymaster for the Department. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on October 15, 1867 for "faithful and meritorious servies during the war". He was eventually promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, and died in 1873 while on active duty in San Francisco. He was the first cousin of Union General Speed S. Fry.
