U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Franklin, Tennessee. In 1833, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress, serving until 1835. He was reelected as a as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving 1843-45). Unable to attend the last session of Congress due to his failing health, he died at age 36 on his father's estate near Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
