Roman Catholic Pope. He served as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from February 14, 1130 to September 24, 1143. Born into a powerful family, he became a cardinal in 1116 and helped draw up the Concordat of Worms in 1122. Following the death of Pope Honorius II in 1130, he was elected pope on February 14, if only by a minority of cardinals. Most voted for Pietro Pierleoni, who took the name Anacletus II (later called an Anti-pope). Innocent fled to France where he was recognized as pope by St. Bernard of Clairvaux. In 1131, he enlisted the aid of King Lothair, who he crowned Holy Roman Emperor. Two years later, Lothair invaded Italy and reinstated Innocent as pope. Anacletus II still had supporters in Rome, including most of it's citizens. However, and after he died in 1138 and at the Latern Council held the following year the schism was formally ended. Shortly after, Innocent started the rebuilding of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Innocent II achieved very little permanent change as pope. After his death in 1143, he was buried in San Giovanni in Laterano, however seven years later he was re-interred in Santa Maria in Trastevere.
