John married Doris Louise Baker in 1947 and they had three children: John Charles, Joe Henry and Cynthia Paige 'Sissy'.

John (Johnny) W. Mares, age 90 of Cistern, Texas joined his loving wife Doris of 58 years in Heaven on January 24, 2016. He was born in Cistern on January 20, 1926 to the late Cyril and Augusta Otahal Mares.
He served his country in WW II with the 69th Infantry, receiving 2 Bronze Stars. Afterwards he worked in the oilfield for Neumann Brothers., Southland and Questor Drilling as Asst. Drilling Superintendent.
Upon his retirement he made Cistern his home where he enjoyed ranching, his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He was a loving father, brother, uncle and friends to all.
He was survived by his sons John C. (Debra) of Goliad, Joe H. (Karen) of Victoria and daughter Sissy of Cistern, grandchildren Cassie, Tanya, Josh (Kathy), Jason (Danette) Mares, and Wendy (Clay) Ohrt, 8 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Sister Callista Mares and Catherine Camp.
He is preceded in death by his wife and his great-grandchild, Kamri Mares, four brothers Bill, Charlie, Felix and George Mares.
Visitation will began at 12:00 noon, January 26, 2016 at Smith Funeral Home-Flatonia followed by a rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Cistern, Texas with Father Eddie Winkler officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Cemetery.
