Emelous S. Gowen, age 75 years, passed away Friday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter D. Kezer, in Newburyport.
He was for many years a member of the local police force, and a veteran of the Civil War.
He lived in Amesbury the larger part of his life being a hatter by trade and for many years was employed at the Merrimac Hat Shop.
He was a member of the E. P. P. Wallace Post; G. A. R; Upchurch Lodge; A. O. U. W.
He had for some time been a resident of Shapleigh in Maine, but a few years ago went to live with his daughter at Newburyport.
He served on the police force for 9 years and was very popular being an excellent officer. He enlisted in the army, then later entered the navy where he made a splendid record and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.
He made many friends and was highly esteemed.
