Rocco P. Mattei, 78
LEICESTER -- Rocco P. Mattei, 78, of 4 Atwood Road, Cherry Valley, a World War II veteran and a retired tool and die maker, died Friday, July 19, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 58 years, Rosemary C. (Stafford) Mattei; three sons, William P. Mattei of Rochdale, Richard J. Mattei of Leicester and Brian J. Mattei of Spencer; a daughter, Lisa A. Atwood of Northfield, Vt.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A son, Philip R. Mattei, died in 2000. A brother, Alfred J. Mattei, died in 1985. Six sisters, Lena Palmerino, Vera Blanchard, Velley Rutherford-Carter, Angelina Tabet, Amy Rodriquez and Edith Mattei, also predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Antonio and Anna (Marzilli) Mattei, and lived there 10 years before moving to Cherry Valley 32 years ago. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade School and was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Mr. Mattei was a tool and die maker for 32 years at General Electric in Ashland, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the third degree Knights of Columbus and Worcester Lodge of Elks 243. He was an alumni of Worcester Boys Club; a founding member of Leicester Booster Club and the Senior Citizens Club; and a member of St. Pius X Church. He coached youth baseball, softball and basketball teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and the outdoors.

The funeral will be held Monday, July 22, from Morrison-Morin Funeral Home, 1131 Main St., with Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, 1154 Main St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 21, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, Massachusetts Affiliate, 330 Congress St., Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02210.
