Architect. George Richard Mann was an American architect, who received fame for designing in 1899 the capitol building for the State of Arkansas. After ten years of enduring constant animosity and political fighting, he resigned from the Arkansas capitol building project before it was finished in 1911. From 1900 to 1930, he was the leading architect in Arkansas. His designs were among the finalists in competitions for the capitol building for the states of Washington, Minnesota, and Montana. Among his projects was the St. Louis City Hall. In Little Rock, he designed many of the city's landmark structures, including the Southern Trust Building, the Bank of Commerce, the State Bank Building, the Blass Department Store, the Gazette Building, and the addition to the Pulaski County Courthouse. His major works outside Arkansas include the Commerce National Bank and Youree Hotel in Shreveport, Louisiana and the Bentley Hotel and the city hall in Alexandria, Louisiana. He designed the dome for the Mississippi Capitol. He worked to restore many homes found on the National Register of Historic Places. Born in Indiana, his father was in the milling business but was killed in the Civil War as a Union soldier. As a child, an uncle and a neighbor helped him to learn mechanical drawings. He was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1876. In partnership, his company adhered to Renaissance, Georgian, and Roman designs. He married and the couple had three daughters.
