Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was one of the most prominent figures in the history of American economics. Loyal to the Union during the Civil War, he was brevetted Brigadier General at 24, for the Army of the Potomac. After the war, he was superintendent of the U.S. Census in 1870, was one of the first presidents of the Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT) and was president of the American Statistical Association (ASA). He was the first president of the American Economic Association (AEA), which before the days of the Nobel Prize, was known as the Walker Award given to leading economists for lifetime achievements. Walker was also an economics professor at Yale and head of the statistical bureau of the U.S. Treasury.
