Israeli Jurist. He was best known as the chief judge in the 1961 trial of Nazi arch-criminal Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, who was convicted of war crimes and hanged. He was a member of the Israeli Supreme Court when he was picked to head the three-judge panel for the Eichmann trial. Born in Danzig (part of Germany at that time), he studied law at the University of London and moved to Palestine in 1933. He moved quickly through the judicial system and was appointed to the Israeli Supreme Court in 1953. In 1980, he was named chief justice, retiring in 1982. In 1991, he was awarded the Israel Prize, the nation's highest civilian honor. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
