U.S. Congressman. Moving to New Jersey in 1846, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law in Orange, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly in 1857 and delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1876. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he was president of the Citizens' Gas Light Company and practiced law until his death at age 68.
