U.S. Congressman. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Battalion, Continental Army, was captured at Fort Washington, in 1776 and exchanged in 1780. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1787-88, 94-96) and judge of Dutchess County, (1795-97). In 1797, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fifth Congress, serving until 1799. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed commissioner to negotiate a treaty with the Seneca Indians and was clerk of Dutchess County, (1807-11, 13-15). He also served as an officer in the United States Customs Service, until his death at age 82.
