Statesman, military officer. Commanded company in William Byrd's regiment during the French and Indian War (1754-63). Studied law in the office of Patrick Henry and married his sister, Ann. Served in both Virginia legislative houses, led regiment during Virginia Royal Governor Lord Dunmore's war and served in the Virginia militia during the Revolutionary War. Killed while battling Indian raiding party near Jeffersonville, Indiana.
