Attorney and scholar. Served as delegate to Republican National Convention in 1860, supporting Abramham Lincoln. Wrote one of the earliest known German translations of Harriet Beecher Stowe's classic, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." In 1888, drafted bill that became known as the Wallach Law, which required use of the secret ballot when voting, a first in the United States.
