U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born the only son of the merchant ship owner Christopher Champlin, he graduated from Harvard College in 1786 and worked as an assistant to his father in the shipping business. Entering politics, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fifth and Sixth Congresses, serving (1797-1801). In 1809, he was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Francis Malbone, serving until 1811, when he resigned. He then engaged in mercantile pursuits and was president of the Rhode Island Bank until his death age 71.
