U.S. Congressman. After receiving a general education, he engaged in mercantile pursuits in New Bedford, Massachusetts, returned to Rhode Island, in 1810 and engaged in the commission business until 1815. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced to practice law in Newport, Rhode Island. He was clerk of the court of common pleas, (1818-33) and a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1827-43). In 1843, he was elected as a Law and Order candidate to the Twenty-eighth Congress, was reelected as a Whig to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. After his term, he again served as a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, (1847-54). He died in retirement at age 74.
