US Congressman. After graduating from the from the University of Kentucky, in 1860, he served as a Captain in the Caddo Rifles, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice law in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was Mayor of Shreveport, (1866-67) and Shreveport City Attorney, (1868-72). In 1872, he was elected as a Liberal Republican to the Forty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Representative James McCleery, serving until 1873. After his term, he resumed the practice of law and became a judge to the 10th Judicial Circuit of Louisiana, serving (1877-80). He was appointed by President Garfield in 1881, U.S. judge for the western district of Louisiana and served until his death at age 76 while on a visit to New York.
