Delphia Louis "Del" Bissonette
Birth: Sep. 6, 1899

Maine, USA
Death: Jun. 9, 1972
Augusta
Kennebec County

Major League Baseball Player. He showed early talent on the diamond, playing at Kents Hill School and then at Westbrook Seminary. In the Portland Telegram semi-pro League he batted .600 and was selected to an all star team which played the Boston Red Sox in an exhibition game in Portland, Maine. Bissonnette's pitching kept the Maine team ahead for eight innings until a Babe Ruth homer gave the Sox a one-run victory. The game was a total humiliation for the professional ball players. Bissonnette was hired by the New York Yankees and dropped after just one year due to a nagging arm injury. He later went on to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers. His best year was 1930 when he finished with 192 hits and a .336 batting average. He was one of only four major leaguers ever walked intentionally despite the bases being loaded, thereby forcing in a run for his team. He eventually went on to coach the Boston Braves in 1947. (bio by: Robert G. Fuller, Jr.)
