Obituary, The Oklahoman, April 28, 1984
Thelma L. Petree, prominent Oklahoma City civic leader and volunteer, died Thursday, April 26, 1984 in Oklahoma City after a brief illness. She is survived by her husband, F.M. Petree, managing partner of Petree Industries, director of Fidelity Bank, former city councilman, director of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, and Oklahoma City University Trustee.

Mrs. Petree provided leadership in the United Methodist Church and civic organizations, as well as being a major supporter and advocate of Oklahoma City University. She was a member of Crown Heights United Methodist Church Administrative Board and was a past president of United Methodist Women, of which she was a life member. In 1979 she received the award for outstanding contributions to Crown Heights United Methodist Church. Mrs. Petree was a life member of the Oklahoma Arts Center. She also supported the Oklahoma Symphony and Lyric Theatre, and was a member of the Hall of Fame banquet commitee. She was past president of the Queensberry Club, 20th Century Club, Ladies Golf Association, Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, Thursday Book Club, and Oklahoma Art League. She helped head the United Fund drive, and was instrumental in organizing the Mental Health Association, Casady Mother's Club, and Presbyterian Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

In 1980, Oklahoma City University honored Mrs. Petree with the Honorary Alumnae award, and in 1981 she received an Honorary Doctors of Humane Letters degree from OCU. She and her husband were inducted into the OCU Endowment Hall of Honor in 1981 , and were also honored that year by OCU, naming it the largest academic division of the Petree College of Arts and Science. The association between the United Methodist Church, OCU, and the Petrees, has been strong for many years. F.M. Petree has been an OCU Trustee since 1961, currently serving as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board. The Petrees led the way for the dramatic turnaround experienced at OCU since 1979, by providing significant financial committments in the form of challenge grants 1979-80, 1980-81. The most recent Petree challenge was announced in November 1983 in conjunction with Mr. & Mrs. James Paul Lynn. The endowment fund generated by the Petree challenge will fund the Petrees Scholars Program at OCU. Mrs. Petree served as co-chairperson of the Friends of the OCU Library Society and co-chairperson of the 1980 Library Benefit. The Petrees were also founding members of the Oklahoma Opera and Musical Theatre Society of OCU.

Petree of Oklahoma City; 7 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Foy Taylor of Midwest City, Mrs. Howard Skaggs of Amarillo Texas, and Mrs. Buster Shaw of Altus Oklahoma; 1 brother, Wayne Anderson of Texarkana Texas.

Mrs. Petree was born December 6 1908 in Clinton, Oklahoma. She attended college at Panhandle A&M and Northwestern State College. Services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, April 28, 1984 at Crown Heights United Methodist Church, with private burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are being completed through Guardian Funeral Home, Midtown. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Mrs. Petree's name to the Petree Scholar's Program at OCU, or the Crown Heights United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
