Howard Stanley (Pete) McNabb, crossed over peacefully at home Thursday morning, May 12, 2011 with his daughter and favorite niece, Terrie Roschetzky, by his side. He was born on September 2, 1914 to Melvin and Dora Stokely McNabb in Kingsville, Texas. He attended schools in Kingsville and graduated from Texas A&I college with a B.A. in History. He enlisted in the Army in August 1940. Becoming frustrated after two years at a desk job in England, Pete requested a transfer to the front lines. He was in Germany within weeks. Capt. McNabb was involved in many important conflicts, including "The Battle of the Bulge". While in command of unit 643C, Lt. McNabb and his company were the first to reach the Rhine River. His friend, Lt. Jewell of the 3rd. platoon, was in the first tank of that unit to reach the river. The two men were photo featured in Life Magazine for this accomplishment. Capt. McNabb spent 192 days of continuing combat during this conflict. He returned to the States in December 1945. He had earned the Bronze Star and four combat stars. He was a man of great dedication to and pride in his flag and country. After his service years, Pete entered the automotive business, working for various dealers in Corpus Christi and thirty years in Robstown at Jennings Chevrolet where he made many life long friends. He married Millie Moreland of Aransas Pass in 1948 and they lived the remainder of their lives in Corpus Christi where they raised their children, a son, Stan and a daughter, Genny. He was a very humble and dedicated husband, and father. He spent his entire life caring for his special needs son.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the love of his life and seven brothers, and four sisters, he being the last of the McNabb siblings.

He is survived by his son, Stan McNabb; daughter, Genny McNabb; a sister-in-law, Winnifred McNabb of Kingsville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family are forever grateful for all the friends and family who helped enable him to spend his last three months comfortably at his home. Special thanks to Janie Thompson, who was there daily and came at a moments notice to help at critical times, Roz Weaver who helped his daughter transition his move home the first couple of nights, his niece Terrie who selflessly put her life on hold to help care for him and his family. They also thank Christus Spohn Hospice staff, Sarah Farmer, Elva and Tina who took exceptionally gentle care of him, and his and Stan's care provider, Sylvia Fonseca. They also thank Debi Frances, Karen Magee, Roz and Jami who continued the tradition of taking Stan for coffee and other outings that were interrupted by his father's declining health.

Pete especially enjoyed the recent bar-b-que prepared by his beloved nephew, Scott Moreland, who predeceased him by ten days.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, May 15, 2011 at Guardian Funeral Home and Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m..
