On Rocket Belt patrol in defense of the Da Nang Military Complex Company C, sent out their nightly squad sized combat patrol that was caught in an ambush by a large hard-core enemy force in the vicinity of the Phuoc Ninh village complex in Hieu Duc District Quang. The beleaguered squad, heavily outnumbered immediately took a number of casualties with three men killed and several wounded as they were assaulted by the enemy force from the front and both flanks utilizing small arms, automatic weapons, and B-40 RPG's (Rocket Propelled Grenades) against the Marines. Radioing for reinforcements, a reaction platoon immediately left for the scene of the battle, deployment during the night, proved more difficult as the resourceful enemy took advantage of the darkness with hit and run tactics in a firefight with the Marines that raged on throughout the night until finally broking contact as daylight approached. Evacuations for the dead and wounded were completed under constant harassing enemy sniper fire that continued as the Marines returned to their Combat Base on Hill 10. PFC Brown was one of he casualties, he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
