William D. "Bill" Knowlton Jr., 87, of Douglas, passed away peacefully in Lincoln May 16th, 2011. He was the son of William D. and Mabel H. Knowlton and was born September 27, 1923 in Lincoln. The Knowlton family moved to Hastings, and then to Los Angeles in 1937, eventually settling in North Hollywood. Bill graduated from Fairfax High School and served his country in the Air Force during World War II in India and Southeast Asia. After the war, Bill worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, Calif. as a machinist. He returned to Nebraska and settled in Douglas in 1984 and was active in stamp club and coin club in Lincoln and made many friends in Douglas and Lincoln. Bill was a deeply spiritual and intellectual man with many interests and profound insights. He loved the outdoors, especially climbing mountains, exploring caves, and enjoying all of the natural wonders of our world. He will be greatly missed.
Bill was preceded in death by his two sisters, Gloria Quinte and LaVone Satzinger. He is survived by nephews, David Quinte and partner Ed Stanza of Galveston, Texas, Jim Satzinger and wife Muriel of Santa Fe, N.M., John Satzinger and wife JoAnn of Springfield, Mo.; nieces, Diane Quinte Henriquez and husband Dan of Canyon Country, Calif., Sue Satzinger Bicknell of Walla Walla, Wash.; 11 grandnieces and nephews; and a growing number of great grandnieces and nephews.
Bill will be entombed in the Veteran's Mausoleum at Lincoln Memorial Park. A private family memorial service will be held on Orcas Island, Wash. in June. Arrangements by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 South 14th Street, Lincoln. Condolences www.lincolnfh.com
