United States Naval Admiral. A 1904 graduate of the Naval Academy, he was wounded in the 1914 occupation of Veracruz, Mexico. Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1937, he was promoted over several senior officers in 1941 to the post of Commander in Chief, U. S. Fleet, with the rank of Admiral, and was the highest ranking naval officer afloat. The highest ranking officer present when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, he was suspended from command ten days later pending investigation. A presidential board of inquiry in 1942 found Kimmel and General Walter C. Short guilty of dereliction of duty, but a naval court of inquiry in 1944 and a congressional investigation in 1946, found no dereliction of duty. No court-martial was held and Husband Kimmel retired in 1942 with the rank of Rear Admiral.
