Orchestra Conductor, Composer. He served as Wagnerian Director for the Metropolitan Opera from 1885 to 1891. He also conducted the New York Symphony and the New York Oratorio Society and produced many several Wagner Operas at Carnegie Hall between 1893 and 1894. In 1895 he organized the Damrosch Grand Opera Company and in 1900 he became staff conductor of the Metropolitan Opera. In 1903 he reorganized the New York Symphony and directed it until 1927 when he became president of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1918, General J. J. "BlackJack" Pershing, head of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in WWI, asked Damrosch to improve the use of music as a weapon of war, reorganize and develop musical training for all military bands, with the goal of heightening military morale. From 1940 to 1948 he was president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. During World War II he founded a school for bandmasters in Fontainebleau, France. He appeared in the films, Carnegie Hall (1947) and "The Star Maker" (1939).
