Flora Ellen Holmes was born to William and Polly Ann Caudill in Morehead, Kentucky on November 26, 1903 and moved to Frederick, Oklahoma at an early age. (1907) The family moved to Oklahoma City when Flora was eight and she had lived there until moving to McCook, Nebraska in 1998.

Flora was always interested in art and started painting in her youth. She did work in oils, watercolor and china painting and for many years was interested in collecting antiques. She graduated from Central High School in 1923 and attended Draughn's College in 1924. She married Herman E. Holmes on September 1, 1927 who preceded her in death on July 26, 1984. Herman "Buck" was a consulting structural engineer. Flora was a past president of Sigma Tau Psi sorority, Clubettes (a Ladies auxiliary of the Young Mens Club), Sooner Book Club, Oklahoma Art League, McDowell Club of Allied Arts. She also was a past member of Town Hall, Rivedere Book Club (Ladies Auxiliary of Professional Engineers Association) and member of the Oklahoma City Art Museum. She was a member of Wesley Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.

Flora had one daughter, Doris Jeanne Rainbolt and husband George Rainbolt of McCook, Nebraska. Three grandchildren, Scot Rainbolt of Papillion, Nebraska, Ellen Rainbolt of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Beth Rainbolt of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. There are seven great grandchildren John, Andrew, and Patrick Rainbolt; Daniel and Amy Brt; and Erin and David Amari. Funeral service 2:00 P.M. Friday at Rose Hill Abbey Mausoleum. Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.
