Revolutionary War Soldier who loaned his House to General George Washington to use as his Headquarters for the Battle of White Plains. One of White Plains' most famous residents, Jacob Purdy joined the Westchester Militia in 1775 and served until the end of the Revolution, and it is his name that the house bears today. It was this simple abode that General George Washington used as his headquarters during the Battle of White Plains in 1776 and again during his second stay for two months in 1778. The Historical Society hosts numerous events at the Purdy House during the year, such as a celebration for Washington's Birthday and an October event commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of White Plains.
