Oldest surviving child of Joel Ranney Jr. of Middlesex Co. Connecticut and Elizabeth Mary Graham, Mary A. Ranney Hoffman was born in Connecticut in 1826. Her parents moved permanently to Franklin County Ohio about 1828.

Although 4 of her younger siblings, Emily, Harriet, John and Joel Cyrus, moved to the Great Plains as adults, Mary, like her oldest brother Sylvester, remained in Ohio, where she married German-born John Jacob Hoffman and raised a family.

In the 1860 US Census for Franklin Co. Ohio, Mary and John's Ohio-born children are listed as:
"Delena" age 11
Virginia age 5
Sylvester age 3
Emily age 8 months

In the 1870 US Census for Franklin County, Ohio, 43-year old Mary, born in Connecticut, is enumerated in the household of "John J Hoffman," notary public, born in Hesse, Germany. Their Ohio-born children are:

"Jennie" age 15
Sylvester age 12
"Emma" age 11
Leontine age 4
"Herbert" under 1

In the US Census of 1880 for Columbus, "J. J." and "Mary A. Hoffman" are enumerated with their Ohio-born children:
"S. W." age 22
"Emelie" age 20
"Anna L. M." age 10
"Henry" age 10

Cemetery records indicate that Mary and John Jacob Hoffman had a young daughter Magdalena (apparently "Delena" in the 1860 Census) who is buried in the same plot with them.

In the 1900 US Census for Columbus, Franklin Co. Ohio,a widowed Mary is enumerated as head of household, along with her daughter Leontine Hoffman, age 35, and son "Hervey C"("Herbert" in the 1870 US Census), age 30.

Mary Hoffman's son Sylvester William (1857-1915), was named for her older brother Sylvester William Ranney (1830-1897).

Mary Hoffman's daughter Virginia (1855-1922) married William Inskeep.
Her daughter Emily (1860-1932) married Frank Inskeep.
Her daughter A. Leontine (1869-1930) married Seth Linton McMillan.
