Sgt. Hortsch served honorably in the United States Army and received a Good Conduct Medal as well as a Purple Heart.
Donald Hortsch was born in Buckman, Minnesota in 1920, then moved to St. Anthony, MN, where his father became the buttermaker for the local creamery and Donald was a resident for the longest period of his short life. He attended St. Anthony School from first through eighth grade, then completed his freshman year at Albany High School. In 1936, his family moved to St. Cloud, MN where Donald graduated from St. Cloud Technical High School and took a job with Kinney Shoes.
Donald Hortsch enlisted in the U. S. Army in July of 1942, received his basic training at Fort Francis E. Warren, Cheyenne, WY. and was later transferred to Scribbner, NE., where he served as chief clerk in the quartermaster air corps. On February 1, 1944, he was sent to Camp Reynolds, PA. and became attached to the allied military government. He left for overseas on February 25, 1944 and was stationed in England until July 16 when he was transferred to France. Sgt. Hortsch, on March 18 was assigned a station with Company A, 2nd European Civil Affairs Regiment in Germany and remained there until the time of his death.
Sgt Hortsch was interred in a European cemetery until 1949 when his body was repatriated to the United States aboard the U.S. transport Barney Kirchbaum. Reinterment services were held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in St. Cloud, MN. on Thursday, April 21, 1949 followed by burial in the family lot at Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud. He was survived by his widow, Lorayne (Golden), his parents, Joseph P. and Margaret (Dehler) Hortsch of St. Cloud, and his sister Geraldine (Tonnell). These next of kin have all since passed away.
