Hollywood Cinematographer. He worked on the films "The Leech" (1921), "The First Woman" (1922), "Is Money Everything" (1923), "Shootin, Injuns" (1925), "The Drop Kick" (1927), "The Patent Leather Kid" (1927), "Lilac Time" (1928), "Broadway Babies" (1929), "The Careless Age" (1929), "The Great Divide" (1929), "Hot Stuff" (1929), and "Weary River" (1929). He and pilot William Hauber were killed during filming of "The Aviator" when their plane crashed while Knechtel was scouting locations for a scene which was to depict a forced landing.
