US Congressman. Moving to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1839, he graduated from the St. Louis University in 1843, studied law and practiced law in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a member of the Missouri State House of Representatives in 1852 and served four terms. In 1859, he presented credentials as a Democratic Member-elect to the Thirty-sixth Congress, was elected as a Democrat to the same Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Francis P. Blair, Jr., serving until 1861. An unsuccessful for reelection, he moved to New York City and engaged in numerous business occupations until his death at age 78.
