US Senator. He graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1854, admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced to practice law in New Orleans, Louisiana. During the Civil War, he was a judge advocate for the Confederate Army. After the war, he was a member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives in 1872, and a member, of the Louisiana State Senate, (1874-78). In 1876, he was as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a professor of civil law at the University of Louisiana, until 1884, when again elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1885-91). After his term, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to France, serving (1893-1897).
