US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was attending the Villanow Academy, when he enlisted into the Confederate Army. Serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, Georgia State Troops, he was wounded at Battle of Atlanta, on July 22, 1864. After the war, he studied law at Cumberland University Tennessee, was admitted to the bar in 1869 and commenced to practice law in La Fayette, Georgia. He served as school commissioner of Walker County (1871-72), a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives (1872-76) and served in the Georgia State Senate, (1877-80). In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was appointed chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1892 and served until his death at age 71.
