Death: Mar. 20, 1962

Scientist. After working five years in astronomy, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Physics and Geography at the University of Arizona in 1906. Then he invented the science of dedrochronology and the research into the relation between sunspot cycles and climate. He established all the major principles of tree-ring dating including the value of long-lived trees such as the Giant Sequoia trees. In addition, funded by the National Geographic Society, he managed to determine the date of construction produced a floating chronology of 585 years for Southwestern ruins of Anasazi dwellings near Four Corners, Arizona. His dendroarchaeological techniques have been used to date structures around the world. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
