US Congressman. Born in Moreland, Georgia, he graduated from the law department of the University of Georgia in 1915, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice at Newnan, Georgia. During the World War I, served in the US Army overseas as a member of Headquarters Detachment of the 82nd Division, (1917-19). After the war, he was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1923-28) and assistant United States Attorney for the northern district of Georgia, (1934-39). In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Emmett M. Owen, reelected to the next seven succeeding Congresses and served until his death. He died at age 61 in Bethesda, Maryland.
