U.S. Congressman. Born the son of U.S. Congressman David Meriwether, he graduated from the University of Georgia, in 1807 and was an instructor at the university in 1808. He then studied law, was admitted to the bar, and practiced for a short time and later engaged in agricultural pursuits in Clarke County, Georgia. During the Creek Indians War in 1813, he served in the U.S. Army, under General Floyd. After the war, he was the United States Commissioner to the Cherokee Indians, a trustee of the University of Georgia and a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives (1821-23). In 1825, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving until 1827. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits and died suddenly while on a trip in Tennessee. His nephew James A. Meriwether, was also a U.S. Congressman.
