US Congressman, CSA Congressman. He graduated from the University of Georgia, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1832 and commenced to practice law in Bentonville, Arkansas. He was member of the Arkansas State House of Representatives, Arkansas State prosecuting attorney, and circuit judge of Arkansas. In 1853, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-third, Thirty-fourth and Thirty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1859. After his term, President James Buchanan appointed him Commissioner of Indian Affairs, in 1859 and he resigned when Arkansas seceded from the Union at the advent of the Civil War, in 1861. He then served in the Confederate House of Representatives from 1862 to 1865. After the war, he was he was appointed tax collector for Arkansas. Both Greenwood, Arkansas and Greenwood County, Kansas are named after him.
