U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the Alabama State Normal School, in 1892, then taught in the public schools of Montgomery, Alabama, (1893-95) and at Columbus, Georgia, (1896-99). He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1900 and commenced to practice law in Lafayette, Alabama. He also was a member of the board of trustees of Alabama Polytechnic Institute. In 1920, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. Thomas Heflin, reelected to the Sixty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1928. After leaving Congress, was appointed judge for the fifth judicial circuit of Alabama, serving until his death at age 76.
