U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States in 1872 and settled in Brooklyn, New York. There he became a newspaper writer and publisher and moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1877. He was editor in chief of the St. Louis Tribune and served as president of the St. Louis Board of Education, (1888-92). In 1893, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third Congress and to the next ten succeeding Congresses, serving until 1915. After his term, he engaged in literary pursuits until his death at age 76.
