Serigraph Artist. She was the designer of the first "LOVE" postage stamp. She was a product of the Catholic school system. Born Frances Kent, she took the name Sister Mary Corita on becoming a Nun in the Order of Immaculate Heart of Mary and then assumed the name Corita Kent upon leaving the order to pursue a secular life. Sister Corita's talent and art classes became well-known during her teaching career at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles, where she turned to the silk-screen process in 1950. She became a symbol of the modern nun. Sister Mary and her order became a target of conservative Catholics, eventually prompting her to return to private life after more than 30 years as a nun. She moved to Boston in December of 1968 and opened an art gallery. She died of cancer and bequeathed the bulk of her estate to The Immaculate Heart College, now a private school with no affiliation to the church.
