Lake County Leader & Advertiser (Polson, MT) - July 22, 2009
Deceased Name: Lee Edwin Stripling

Lee Edwin Stripling, 87, a fiddler, golfer and much loved father and friend, passed away from complications from lung cancer in Seattle on April 20. He will be buried at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 31 in Lakeview Cemetery next to his wife of 50 years, Lucille Fulton Stripling, who died in 1998. Friends and family are invited to gather after the service at the old Fulton house, 50652 U.S. Highway 93 in Polson.

Lee - or Edwin to his friends and family - was born on Aug. 30, 1921, in Pickens County, Ala. He was the son of Tellie and Charlie Stripling, Alabama"s most recorded fiddler. He was guided by music at both ends of his life, first as a sharecropper"s son, where he played at his father"s side from age 8, and then in a glorious revival starting in his 70s. From Northwest music gatherings to the national stage, he was beloved for his kind heart, his zest for life and the delight he provided with old-time fiddle and Western swing music. His last scheduled gig with the Lee Stripling Trio was to be in Santa Fe, N.M. in late August.

After meeting Lucille in Seattle, where he was stationed as a member of the Army Air Corps in World War II, Lee returned to Polson every summer on vacation, delighting in family, fishing, golf and music. Lucille"s father, Finley E. (Elva) Fulton, was a rural mail carrier in Polson, and her mother, Roma Fulton, worked at the Dewey Lumber Company and later the Polson Library. Lucille"s grandparents, Edith and P.F. Hern, a former Lake County Commissioner, moved to Mountainview from Ohio in 1917.

Memorials were held earlier in Seattle for the music community and friends, and in Alabama, for his six surviving siblings and other relatives. Lee is also survived by his daughters: Carol Stripling of Seattle, and Sherry Stripling (Shirley Swanson) of Mount Vernon, Wash.; grandson Alex Swanson of Seattle; sister-in-law Colleen (Seth) Jackson, formerly of Polson, now of Seattle; nephew Jordan Jackson and niece Gail Jackson, both of Seattle, and families. In addition to many friends in Montana, he is survived by his wife"s cousins, Arlene (Bill) Erickson, and daughters Jan and Jill; Lonnie (Ardell) Hern and daughter Lisa; and Leonard (Leigh Ann) Hern and children Holly, David and Hilton.

The Lee Stripling Young Fiddlers" Scholarship Fund has been created for promising young fiddlers who would like to attend Centrum"s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Wash. Details of how to contribute and more about Lee"s life can be found at" www.leestripling.com.
