=1301279&GRid=68367538&was married June 10,1847 to Martha Ellen Cole. Buried in Allendale, MO. The known family background of John Henry Matthews, the father of John Ira Mathews, is very sparse. It comes from what has been found in family bibles, letters and information recorded by his descendents. Descendents of his wife, Martha Ellen (Cole) Matthews, collaborated some of the dates and information on John Henry in their reseach of the Cole family ancestry. A trip to Kentucky, as search of records and cemeteries in the Louisville area, then a search of national archives genealogy data would, in all likelikhood, uncover additional information about John Henry's parents and siblings. To the best of our knowledge, that information is not available in our branch of the family at this time. But even a small bit of information on John Henry and his times helps us to know and understand him and ourselves a little better. That is what is provided below and is taken from letters, bibles and recorded info available. John Henry Matthews (Mathews) Born: March 17, 1828, in Kentucky (probably Louisville). Married: June 10th 1847, to Martha Ellen Cole. Died: June 19, 1884. Buried: Allendale, Missouri. John Henry Matthews and Martha Ellen (Cole) had fourteen children. Seven grew to adulthood. The others dies as infants or during childhood. All were born in Marysville, Clark County, Indiana, except for the last child, who was born in Nebraska. Martha Ellen (Cole) Matthews, John Henry's first wife, died October 2,1872. Her "Cole" family tree is included in the book that all descendents have. Names, birth dates, and dates of death of John Henry and his wives and childern are listed in the"Descendents of John Henry Mathews Generation 1"section of the book comiled by W.L. Loescher. John Henry's second wife, Martha Jane Cortner (Courtner)was likely the sister of David Courtner, the husband of Mrtha Ellen(Cole) Matthews'sister. (Sonya Mathews note: for the remainder of this info..contact any descendent of John Ira Mathews.)
