U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Dartmouth College, in 1787, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Salem, New Hampshire, in 1790. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1797-99) and a member of the New Hampshire State Senate, (1801-03). In 1803, he was elected as a Federalist to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses, serving until 1807. After his term, he resumed the practice of law, was again a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1810-11) and served as High Sheriff of Rockingham County, (1813-18).
