Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Army as a Sergeant in Company E, 11th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Spotsylvania, Virginia on May 12, 1864. His citation reads "Six color bearers of th regiment having been killed, he voluntarily took both flags of the regiment and carried them through the remainder of the battle."
