Montana Governor. He graduated from the Montana University of Law School, also from the Columbus School of Law, at the Catholic University of America, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Helena, Montana. He was a member of Montana House of Representatives (1943-44), was the Lewis and Clark County's Attorney (1945-47), Special Counsel of the Industrial Accident Board (1947-49), Associate Justice of the Montana Supreme Court (1953-56) and Attorney General of Montana (1957-69). In 1969, he was elected as a Democrat the 17th Governor of Montana, serving until 1973. During his term, he combined more than one hundred state agencies into nineteen departments and implemented the new state constitution once it was ratified. After leaving office, he was a member of the American Bar Association, chairman of the Western Governors’ Conference and served on the National Governors Association’s Executive Committee. Due to failing health for years, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home.
