U.S. Congressman. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, he graduated from Morehouse College Georgia, in 1931, from the University of Michigan Law School, in 1934, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Jacksonville, Florida. He was one of very few African American attorneys in the State of Florida and co-founded the National Lawyers Guild in 1937, what is believed to be the first racially integrated law firm in the United States. He was senior attorney for the United States Department of Labor, (1939-43), legal officer of the Federal Fair Employment Practices Commission, 1943 and senior member of the Goodman, Crockett, Eden and Robb Law Firm, in Detroit, Michigan, (1946-66). In addition, he was judge of the recorder’s court, Detroit, (1967-79) and acting corporation counsel for the City of Detroit, in 1980. In 1980, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-sixth and to the Ninety-seventh Congress by special election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of United States Representative Charles C. Diggs, Jr. and reelected to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1991. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he lived in retirement until his death at age 88 in Washington, D.C.
