Frederick Newton Smith Jr., of Plymouth, formerly of Holbrook, died June 12, of natural causes. He passed peacefully in the company of family at Jordan Hospital. Fred was born Feb. 22, 1920, in Dorchester. At age 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves and went on to serve nearly seven years of active duty in World War II, including combat tours in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters and service about the USS Alchiba and USS Oyster Bay. Following the war, Fred was married to Edith (McEachern), with whom he would enjoy 54 wonderful years until Ediths passing in 2003. Fred worked as a draftsman and tool designer for various companies in the Boston area until his retirement in 1985 from the Gillette Company in Boston, after which he enjoyed spending his days watching Boston sports teams, attending the Tuesday night dinners at the John Alden Sportmans Club and relaxing along the shore of his home on Fresh Pond. Fred is survived by his four children, Alison M. Rice and Jacqueline A. Smith of Plymouth, Susan E. McAndrews of Weymouth and Frederick N. Smith III of Oslo, Norway; seven grandchildren, Steve Rice of Washington, DC, Kayleigh Smith and Pal Marius Smith of Oslo, Norway, Edward McAndrews III of Weymouth and Cameron Pimental, Jessica Atwater and Porscha Lennox of Plymouth; and one great-grandson, Aiden Christopher Rice of Washington, D.C. Visiting hours will be held at the Richard Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road (Rte. 3A), Plymouth (Manomet), Monday, June 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, June 21, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
