Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War as a Sergeant the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action at Petersburg, Virginia on April 2, 1865. His citation reads "Planted the flag upon the parapet while the enemy still occupied the line; was the first of his regiment to enter the works."
